Looking for good books to read? Here’s my 2019 reading list that may help you decide your next reads.

This page lists all the books I have read (or listened to) in 2019.

The list includes –

1. Link to preview the Kindle version of the book (you don’t need the Kindle Device or Kindle App on your phone, just click on Free Preview and the excerpt from the book will open in your browser.)

2. Link to the book summary / review, where I have managed to write up my notes.

2019 Reading List

Non-Fiction

Why Information Grows: The Evolution of Order, from Atoms to Economies by César Hidalgo

Reading this book is one of my brightest decisions in 2019. I have a Kindle copy as well as a hard-copy of this book. Yup, its that good!

Finite and Infinite Games by James P. Carse

Wish I had read this book a decade or two ago. Tough read but absolutely worth it.

Reading it has been one of my brightest decisions in 2019. I know that’s the second time I have said it.

The Penguin History of the World by J M Roberts

1,100 page tome. Took a while to get through but it is the book to read if you want to understand the broad sweep of history from ancient times to modern day.

This is the book to read if you want to know the difference between Punic Wars and Peloponnesian War or if you want to know the name by which Istanbul was called for most of history.

The Little Book of Hygge by Meik Wiking

My attempt at learning ‘how to live well‘ from Danish culture. Author is the CEO of The Happiness Research Institute in Copenhagen.

The Art of Making Memories: How to Create and Remember Happy Moments by Meik Wiking

Beautiful book about the importance of positive, happy memories and how to create them. Must-read.

Start With Why by Simon Sinek

(Book Summary)

Based on the popular Ted Talk that’s been viewed a mind boggling 47 million times. One of my favourite speakers.

Zen: The Art of Simple Living by Shunmyo Masuno

My attempt at learning to ‘simplify my life‘ based on Japanese culture.

Think and Win like Dhoni by Sfurti Sahare

(Book Review)

The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck by Mark Manson

(Book Summary)

Thirty: A Collection of Personal Quotes, Advice, and Lessons by Emily Maroutian

(Book Review)

Brilliant book and an accidental find. My first attempt at writing a book review.

The Monkey Theory: Conquer Your Mental Chatter by Sfurti Sahare

(Book Review)

The Verdict: Decoding India’s Elections by Prannoy Roy and Dorab R. Sopariwala

Read during the election season earlier in the year.

Fiction

The Complete Mars Trilogy: Red Mars, Green Mars, Blue Mars by Kim Stanley Robinson

My best science fiction read of 2019. This trilogy was written in the 1990s and has more complex characters, a very detailed description of Mars landscape and also covers the science of terra-forming. All of this in story. I am a fan of The Martian, but this trilogy is much better.

The North Water by Ian McGuire

(Book Review)

Long-listed for the Man Booker prize in 2016.

Bought in 2016 and managed to read only in 2019. Japanese have a word for art of buying books and never reading them – Tsundoku.

The Supernova Era by Cixin Liu

(Book Review)

Consider Phlebas by Iain M. Banks

(Author Overview)

Re-read this in 2019. After having read the entire 10 book series in 2018. One of my favourite writers in my favourite genres – Science Fiction & Fantasy.

Clone World (Undying Mercenaries Series Book 12) by B. V. Larson

This twelfth outing of James McGill is jolly good fun as ever.

Armor World (Undying Mercenaries Series Book 11) by B. V. Larson

Each book is set in different world as you have realized by now and exposes James McGill to a new set of challenges to overcome to save humanity. Fun!

The Complete SF Collection by Richard K. Morgan

The Netflix series – Altered Carbon is based on these adventures of Takeshi Kovacs. Managed to read Altered Carbon and Broken Angels so far.

A Memory Called Empire (Teixcalaan) by Arkady Martine

Aftershocks (The Palladium Wars Book 1) by Marko Kloos

I guess its obvious by now that I am sucker for Science Fiction series.

Poetry

Turquoise Silence by Sanober Khan

(Book Review)

First complete book of poetry I have ever read. First poetry book that I have read. The poems may sound basic for some evolved beings, but for me they were just right.
